Film review: Zakhar Berkut No. 3
The value system does not require revision, the status does not require change - the same, and Zakhar and Ivan willingly allow young Maxim to prove himself. Bogun is not just an avenger of the family, but also has a cheerful disposition and a peculiar humor. Revenge doesn't shut out the rest of the world for him. Even Peter the blacksmith, who is shown with only a few strokes, has his own character, quite cheerful. Burundi's motives are also clear - he is avenging his son (a matter of honor) and is therefore distracted from a hike through the Carpathians. Miroslava turns against her father only when she finds out that he is a traitor. And Tugar himself - he does not change so much as he remains faithful to feudal values: the estate is above all. Even Gard is not a thief - he serves his master and shares his values and beliefs. Moreover, each of the characters understands and everyone commands respect. And that is why the final scene, usually banal and predictable in such films, here will do credit to the best Shakespearean tragedies.
Acting work. Robert Patrick fascinates with his look and important appearance. A true leader is brave, wise, and devoted to the values he embodies! The Council also organically got used to the role of a wise queen who is more focused on people than on values. Tugar Volk brilliantly demonstrated his boyar arrogance, his restrained (but no less sincere and deep) love for his daughter, and the burden of power in a difficult political situation. Ivan is glowing with pleasure from the life he leads. Maxim has all the complexes of a young man and a younger brother, which are nevertheless smoothed out by mutual understanding and love for their land. Gard is the epitome of rigor and pride, and Voloshchenko has always been able to play well when circumstances become stronger than you. And he succeeded in his insidious smile too!
Cymbals and other national motifs are skillfully woven into quite American music. But these are small things. One of the most delicious ingredients here is the props and costumes. Every bracelet, every hryvnia, a swarga, a falcon trident, all the various jewelry, bags, clothes - everything is thought out and made with great love. Take Tugar's cloak, for example! We could have just made a crimson one, but no, we didn't bother and decorated it with a bombastic pattern! The lamellar armor of the Tugar, the leather "armor" of the Tukholts (rings sewn on a leather base - the then chain mail for beggars), the Tukhol axes, the Mongolian tamga (which has already caused a holivar on Facebook) - all this is excellent. Combining styling with sources is the way to work!
The pagan surroundings are also interesting. A mixture of Christianity and pagan remnants came out very well in the "Outpost", they decided to do about the same thing here. A certain priest could have visited Tukhle many years ago and started the fashion for Christian names. But it has never been possible to eradicate faith in the gods so quickly. Paganism in the film is fully justified: Christianity came to Galicia late, sometime in the 12th century, the cities (around which Christian culture was formed) are far away, so it would be strange to expect the Tukholians (and even the local boyars) to abandon Perun and Mokosha. Well, the same Tugar hung up crosses and laughs at the forgotten gods, but he remembers them, but not a word about Christ. Similarly, the Varangian Guard could well have preserved ancient beliefs and fashion, serving on the edge of Russia. The bet slip number is shown in the bet history section of the user account.
