How To Raise Creative Children?

Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

Creativity comes to children naturally due to early inexperienced years of their lives. Their quest to find answers almost about everything they see happening, and their attempts to figure out best possible solutions to deal with the situation at hand, is what fuels their creative minds. Some children are more creative than the others of their age. But the good thing about creative thinking is that it could be fostered in every child by engaging him in various mental and physical activities which stimulate the mind and gives them the verve required to think creatively.

Knowing the fact that kids who are given unstructured time and lots of material to boost their imagination, Nordic International School has devised its curriculum around the psychology of a child’s mind. The play-based learning approach adopted by Nordic International School is just the right mechanism for inspiring children to be innovators.

The activities children do in their classrooms could be taken a step ahead at their homes under the guidance of their parents so that the creative side of the personality keeps developing.

To raise a creative child, the qualities that make him creative should be preserved and enriched.

Six qualities of creative children:

Curiosity: The quality that makes them question about anything and everything.
Keen observation: Observation raised curiosity and makes them good learners.
Playfulness: Playful nature keeps them busy and away from boredom.
Sensitivity: Sensitive to emotions, environment, aesthetics etc.
Originality: Non-conformists- Always find new ways of doing things based on their own original ideas
Expressive: Express ideas eloquently, could be verbal expression or an artistic expression.

To make sure that the kids don’t lose the best part of their personality i.e. being creative individuals, as a part of their growing up in a mechanized world, it is necessary to keep enriching the qualities of creativeness.

Seven effective techniques to raise creative children:

1. Create a good ambiance: The place where they spend time, school/home should be inviting, as it greatly affects mood of a child which have an impact over his creativity.
2. Right choice of schooling: Enroll them in a school that supports your thought of letting creative juices of your child flow.
3. Be a role model: kids don’t become creative by being taught how to be creative. They need to be shown how to be creative.
4. Prevent Boredom: Always keep activities jar handy for every time your child gets bored. Let him draw a chit from the jar and supply him with the items required for the activity.
5. Get out of the way: The best gift we can give a child to discover his creative side, is the gift of time on their own.
6. Encourage your child: Encourage him when he produces a piece of art, when he wins a race, or when he tries telling a story out of his imagination. Encourage him every step of the way.
